About Us ------------- We are four young people from Upper Hutt who are cycling up to the Parachute music festival, starring acts such as Switchfoot and The Parachute Band, which is taking place in Hamilton from 29 January - 1 February. We are Michael Gray, Graeme Knowles, Stephen Loader and Kyle Nelson.
We have been practising throughout 2009 and are ready to undertake the 1022km journey there and back again after the festival, taking 2 weeks. We are leaving Upper Hutt on the 25th of January to get there on Friday the 29th. Then departing on the 1st of February to get home on the 5th. We have Ray Cheung as our support person who will drive up in his car carrying our camping gear for the festival, and spare tires etc. We will make four overnight stops at Foxton, Taihape, Taupo and Putaruru, cycling State Highway 1.
We are raising money via World Vision towards hospital beds for a new health centre in Tubehoneza, Rwanda. The Parachute festival raises money for this community year after year and our contribution is for 20 hospital beds valued at $750 each. So our overall goal is $15,000 but we want to raise as much as we can.
In Tubehoneza, Rwanda, the closest medical centre is miles away. The townspeople have to walk miles in order to get to there and this journey is made even harder for pregnant women in labour or those unable to walk. It is also extremely overcrowded, and many patients are turned away. So a new health centre is under development and a maternity ward was funded last year by festival goers at Parachute. Work has already started on that and this year Parachute are raising money for a nutritional block to deal with malnutrition. Our goal as part of Bike To Parachute is to raise money for hospital beds for the health centre.
Please feel free to contact World Vision if you would like to know more about the health centre project.
You can find our Facebook group by clicking that big button to your left. There are a number of methods you can sponsor us by, which you can find on the Sponsor page. We've already raised enough money for one hospital bed! Help us fund more!
