A few keen Southland locals are now planning a cycle tour of the southern region of NZ in February 2012 and we're keen to raise some funds for the Foundation for Youth Development at the same time.

We’ve called it the Great Southern Tour (GST) and we will be covering 470km over 5 days travelling from Riverton to Manapouri (Day 1), Manapouri to Garston (Day 2), Garston to Clyde (Day 3), Clyde to Hawea (Day 4) and finishing in Queenstown (Day 5) on Waitangi Day (5 Feb 2012) - see below for more details.

I am hoping to raise funds for a cause that I feel strongly about - Project K and Kiwi Can - both Foundation for Youth Development (FYD) programmes. These programmes are designed to help young people improve their confidence, build leadership and social skills as well as key life skills and ultimately help grow great Southland kids.

About FYD

FYD’s vision is to impact positively on the lives of young people living in Southland by establishing solid foundations to allow them to grow into leaders of the future. Its aim is for 5-18 year olds across our region to have access to our programmes. It currently works with 7 schools in Southland including Mataura, Bluff, Stewart Island and Invercargill affecting over 1,400 young people each week of the school year.

GST Great Southern Tour Details

This tour comprises of a core group of riders who will ride the whole way. The alternate group is open to casual riders who can either do a full section or a part of a section. There will be backup vehicles for breakdowns or casual riders. These vehicles will carry all spare equipment, wet weather gear, food and water so you will not be required to carry anything more than your snack food and one bottle. Accommodation is arranged for the core group and any others will need to make their own arrangements.

This epic ride will not only be fun but an awesome opportunity to support a great cause.

Day 1 (2 Feb)
Riverton to Manapouri (Road)
- Core Riders 122km
- Casual Riders 62km (from Blackmount Hill)

Day 2 (3 Feb)
Manapouri to Garston (Road)
- Core Riders 101km
- Casual Riders - 52km (from Manapouri)/49km (from Mossburn)

Day 3 (4 Feb)
Garston to Clyde, via Nevis (Mountainbike)
- Core Riders 75km
- Casual Riders - 75km with 4WD support

Day 4 (5 Feb)
Clyde to Hawea (Road)
- Core Riders 87km
Casual Riders - 62km (from Cromwell)/25km (from Luggate)

Day 5 (6 Feb)
Hawea to Queenstown, via Crown Range (Road)
- Core Riders 87km
- Casual Riders - 25km (from Arrowtown)
