The Breast Cancer Research Trust has put out a challenge to New Zealanders to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer by the year 2018. The $1000 challenge aims to raise enough funds each year to help them achieve this goal. I am an cancer survivor and now my cousin has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer, so from a personal perspective I am motivated to respond to this challenge and raise the stakes.

My goal is to encourage at least 1000 people to sponsor a cycle ride to support this cause. Heres the deal.

I have been cycling to my work in the centre of Auckland for several months, a modest distance of 8 km. Neither my bike nor I are built for cycling long distances. However, on November 12th I am going to cycle to work the long way from Wellington. I will follow a 1000 km route along the east coast of the North Island, supported by a team of three very capable cyclists who will push me when the going gets tough. The aim is to arrive at work before the end of November. That month will be the 19th anniversary of the end of my chemotherapy cancer treatment.

My target is $15,000, but this is constrained only by the value of sponsorship amounts, and the number of people who contribute. Please help me to reach this target.

If you cannot donate financially, at least give this cause some of your time. Tell three of your friends, colleagues or family members about this challenge and encourage them to either sponsor the ride or to tell three of their family and friends. You may know of a friend or family who has been affected by breast cancer, or by some other form of cancer. This is everyone's opportunity to contribute to this worthy cause.
