During the cold winter months I decided it was time to start thinking about a new challenge. Memories of the Oxfam Vietnam to Cambodia 500km Cycle Challenge that Bruce my husband and I did in 2005 are still vivid, but 5 years on its time for a new challenge.

A challenge isnt a challenge unless its hard and whats hard for me is running! So I have decided to run a marathon. Yes, 42 kilometres of running!! Gulp. I HATE running...but I'm hoping to learn to love it - well, that's the challenge! Im going to run the New Plymouth marathon which takes place on 6 March 2010 and goes from the park gates of Egmont National Park to the coast at Waitara. I am also fundraising for CanTeen - an organisation that is focused on providing support and activities for a very special group of cancer patients - the 13 to 24 year olds. CanTeen does wonderful work with young cancer patients with education workshops, camps and regular monthly activities.

I will be running this marathon in memory of my friend Tim Whelan who died of cancer in 1986, aged just 20. Despite his short life Tim has been a great inspiration to me over the years. I dedicated my book "Sink or Swim" (which tells the story of my own recovery from cancer 10 years ago) to Tim.

My goal is to raise at least $3700 to send one recovered CanTeen member on an Outward Bound course during 2010. This will be an amazing opportunity for a very special person to extend themselves and regain the confidence they may have lost to cancer.
