Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.

My name is Steve Horwell and I am competing in the two day Coast to Coast race in February 2011.

The Coast to Coast race is an event involving cycling, mountain running and river kayaking a distance of 243km from the west coast of the south island to Christchurch on the east.
As a part of the training I am already doing for this I have chosen a number of other events to compete in to prepare for the Coast to Coast. I call it the Stevie Series 2010. The other events are the Northern crossing (100km), the Arthur Lydiard Legend Marathon (42.195km),the Hell of the north cycle race (105km),the Taupo cycle challenge(160km), the Keri Keri half marathon(21km) and the Goat Challenge in Tongariro national park. These events combined with my current training regime will lead up to the ultimate challenge of the Coast to Coast next year.

Parkinson’s is a progressive, neurological condition which can affect everyday activities including talking, walking, swallowing and writing. More than 9000 people in New Zealand are diagnosed with Parkinson’s. It is a life time condition with the most common symptoms being tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement. It also impacts on people’s emotions, thinking and other aspects of physical function besides movement, including speech. Parkinson’s can affect anyone, regardless of age.

Some close members of my family including my late grandmother Awia(who passed last year) have been living with Parkinson’s for some time now. My grandmother was a beautiful, caring lady who had always had time for her family, friends and local community.

As a part of completing the Coast to Coast and the Stevie Series 2010 I am raising money for Parkinson’s New Zealand to help them in their on-going research, education and support for people and families living with Parkinson’s.
