Cancer. One in three New Zealanders are affected by cancer and in the year 2000 cancer accounted for approximately 29% of deaths in New Zealand. Approximately 7,500 die from cancer each year and these deaths come from the 16,000 people that develop cancer every year. Many know the devastation cancer can bring and the effect it has on the ones we love.
Whats worse than the current situation of cancer is the predicted future. The number of people that develop cancer is expected to increase to 22,000 by 2011 (Gavin and Marshall 2001) and the number of annual deaths to 9000 by 2012 (Ministry of Health 2002).
In 2005, Ron Scanlan, a local of Wellington, unknowingly became part of those statistics. A loving partner, father and sufferer of Hodgkins Lymphoma, he is a man that is giving everything in the fight against cancer. Having even ventured as far as Germany and spent his life savings on specialist treatment, it still isnt over yet. The fight against cancer, one that many dont survive, can only continue with the ongoing support of the community and one particular organization, the Cancer Society. Their mission is to reduce the incidence of cancer and ensure the best care for New Zealanders.
In October, Ron, a very talented racing driver, will be fulfilling one of his lifes dreams by competing in the Dunlop Targa NZ event and at the same time raise money for the Cancer Society. This event spans over 900 kilometres of closed roads, between Auckland and Wellington. (www.targa.co.nz)
Ron and his team are committed to raising $10,000 for the Cancer Society and to give hope and inspiration to those suffering from cancer around New Zealand. They want to inspire others to make a difference and Ron is aiming for a Top 5 finish to show that nothing is impossible.
The Targa NZ event runs from October 25th to October 31st and we want your support by donating to the Cancer Society!
To make a donation click "Make a Donation" on the right hand side and support Ron and the Cancer Society!
If you live in New Zealand your donation is tax deductible and a receipt will be issued.
