Working together with Nurse Maude Hospice, we have confirmed that our goal is to raise over $30,000 which will enable the Hospice to cover the cost of a specialist hospice palliative care nurse for 20 hours a week for a whole year.

THE BACKGROUND

Hi, my name is Bryan the founding member of Nurse Maude Hospice Cycling Team who are raising funds for Christchurch's Nurse Maude Hospice to help the hospice help families in times of need.

My family’s lives were turned upside down with my Mum’s (Lyndele) diagnosis with terminal cancer (an extremely rare form) in late May 2010. The diagnosis was completely ‘out of the blue’ with no prior symptoms which was particularly hard to swallow. Mum is a fighter and despite her grim prognosis set about setting some goals which included Christmas 2010 and the arrival of her new grandson in April 2011.

Mum’s condition deteriorated significantly in July 2010 and she was admitted to Christchurch’s Nurse Maude Hospice with a 50/50 chance of surviving more than a few days. This was our family’s first exposure to a Hospice environment and words can’t express our thanks to those staff that looked after Mum and us over the period while Mum was in the Hospice. The staff are truly amazing, big hearts, big smiles and a kindness that surpasses anything we have ever been exposed to. A lot of the staff working there are volunteers giving up their own time to help others in need and the Hospice itself relies heavily on these volunteers and donations received from the community.

Mum spent two weeks in the Hospice and unbelievably her condition stabilised. Mum's fignting spirit and amazing courage saw her through Christmas 2010, the arrival of her newest grandson (born 12th April 2011), her and Dad's 40th wedding anniversary and family birthdays for 2011.

Unfortunately Mum was unable to reach her next goal of seeing us complete this tour and passed away peacefully on Wednesday 28th September 2011.

THE FUNDRAISING EVENT AND TEAM

Following Mum’s prognosis I felt helpless but I wanted to make a difference so I decided to form a cycling team to raise money for Christchurch’s Nurse Maude Hospice. A call to a mad Scottish mate Craig and a few beers at a Xmas function with Jo and Rob resulted in discussions amongst four keen cyclists and Team Nurse Maude Hospice was formed with the view to completing in the 2011 Five Passes Cycle race. Five Passes Tour covers 600km over 4 days starting in Christchurch, crossing the South Island via the Lewis Pass and returning via Arthurs Pass back to Christchurch (refer link to website on Five Passes Tour left/bottom of the page).

Should be a piece of piss we reckon (after all Bear Grylls reckons pain is negative energy leaving the body), we're picking we will be well freed of any negative energy by the time we roll back into Christchurch!!!
