EVENT: Kayak for Cancer
EVENT DATE: 16/07/2006

Firstly, thank you very much for visiting our fundraising page.

Just updating the page.

Saturday night was a great night. People dancing, drinking, laughing and hearing about the men's journey. A great time was had by all.

The team relayed their story to the crowd, which was amazing to hear. They had a few difficulties to overcome but despite this they continued on their path and completed the journey as planned.

An amazing, amazing journey.

Wednesday's presentation night was very informative about the team's journey. They made it sound like fun and explained everything very clearly to all non-kayakers there. It was great to hear about this adventure. A very humourous night as well. Hearing them speak and seeing a power point presentation, just tied in the blogs with a visual as well.

An excellent night again for all the supporters who turned up.

Again, to the team and support crew, thank you for all the effort you have put in to this Kayaking adventure. We hope you have enjoyed the journey as much as everyone who followed you on the the blogs.

Thank you.

Browns Bay Racquets Club members have all followed this epic journey, of which Chris Dench is an integral part (since Adam was a pup), and we really wanted to do something special that expressed the admiration and support the kayak team have had. Also, an opportunity to fundraise further for Child Cancer Foundation.

We have the venue (including a newly refurbished bar), we have the man power and the resources to provide a little bit more from all of us, as well as an opportunity to let your hair down and have some fun!

We would love all those involved, those who have followed their progress, those who've been involved in any way or simply those who care to come along and join in. Chris' band is playing and we are really good at having parties!!!

We'd love to see you there!!

************** A PRESENTATION NIGHT OUT **************

Wednesday 16 August 2006
Northcross Intermediate - Sartors Avenue Browns Bay
7.30pm

The guys will be coming along to tell their stories of the journey to the Cape.

This is an open invitation to everyone and anyone who is keen to hear how it all went for them on the trip North.

It will be a great night out, so come along and enjoy.

*****************************************

6 of the 9 amazingly adventurous men MADE IT TO CAPE REINGA, NORTHLAND to help raise money for the Child Cancer Foundation, Auckland Branch. They started on Friday 30 June 2006 and completed this challenge on Sunday 16 July 2006.

The knowledge that we maybe able to help children and their families with Cancer is amazing. All the men in the team have had close family members, friends or themselves affected with Cancer. We have seen how difficult this was for our friends and families and realise that this Cancer ordeal would be especially hard if it was your child. In fact it would be heart breaking. So, this is the reason why we all want to help.

******** PLEASE READ THE BLOGS ********

Under the blogs you can keep updated on the mens' journey which are reported to me by Ruth Henderson. They are very interesting.

Also we have the chance of a prize to our donators. Read the blogs to find out about the prize. Happy reading.

****** THEY MADE IT, THEY MADE IT ******

Stephen Law, Charlie Barker, Greg Dunning, Guy Folster, Neil Watson, and Chris Dench completed their challenge of kayaking to Cape Reinga. They truly did an amazing job. Well done guys!!!

****************************************

One of the reasons that Child Cancer was the nominated charity amongst the men was due to Chris' journey with cancer, which is as follows.

In 1978 as Chris participated in an Inter School Cross Country event, he noticed pain in his leg. On further investigation he was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma. He was 15 years old. So began the process of chemotherapy and radiotheraphy to fight the cancer, but unfortunately his leg had to be amputated. Prior to this, Chris had led a normal, healthy and very sporty lifestyle, playing tennis and running.

Whilst as a newly diagnosed cancer patient, he did have negative days, but these were predominatly pain related or the inconvenience of learning and adjusting to having prosthesis. He found that he didn't dwell or stress on mundane activities or life issues as a teenager, because dealing with cancer put the focus of living as a higher priority. He remembers the UV rays were slowly damaging his wig and turning it pink, but he never noticed. He just enjoyed living one day at a time.

Chris always maintained a positive attitude whilst undergoing treatment, but reflects now, that it did alter his thinking and the way he currently lives his life. He found he became more empathetic, understanding and compassionate to others. His outlook of life changed, he lives life to the full, he pursued a career that he enjoys, Music teacher during school terms, which allows him to pursue other interests during holidays, rather than a high paying, high stress, less time source of employment.

Chris has also achieved some amazing accomplishments; climbed Mt Taranaki, played premier grade tennis, won the doubles club champs, was a finalist for North Harbour Sports Awards, and continues to be very active.

Chris volunteers to Child Cancer Foundation Auckland Branch helping with the annual SOCK's (Siblings of Cancer Kids) camp.

Chris has found that over the decades the advancements with modern technology have been great. His artificial limb is now made of carbon fibre with less weight but increased strength. This has made it easier for Chris to achieve his goals. He also developed an aqua leg for amputees, which is waterproof, hence his involvement with kayaking.

Chris is a modest unassuming man who has not let his cancer journey impede his lifestyle. His main focus has been to live his life as normal as possible and his philosophy is just to get on with it. He is only now sharing his story, because he believes passionately about this Kayaking Adventure, Kayak4Cancer, and hopes that his story can help others.

Chris, you are truly an inspiration to us all!!!

We get to do all the hard work; train for and complete this event, but we really need your help to make a difference to our charity.

19/07/2006 albert ross the albatross $100.00 It would be great to be able to add 6 more zeros to this donation.
It would still be a very small price to pay for the priviledge of being a tiny part of the guys challenge and success. To meet and see Janet, Donna and Hinewai in action was a bonus. If those girls support cancer families as they do kayakers and their supporters, what stars they must be to families in strife.
Thank you all, seems woefully inadequate for what I gained from your ''paddle'' but thanks anyhow.
Wonderful memories, top people and a job so well done.
Cant wait to see what your next ''crazy'' idea will be.
Rock on.
