The First Tee is an initiative of the World Golf Foundation in the USA and was created initially to attract young people to the game by providing learning facilities for disadvantaged children.

It soon became apparent that golf was a powerful medium to impart some of the values inherent in the game, such as courtesy and respect. A life skills curriculum was developed around nine core values and seamlessly woven into the golf lessons. For example, children learning how to putt may also be learning about Respect for the green, and from that basis learning how to show respect at home, in school, for their environment and for themselves.

Providing children with a set of values to call their own can help them to make wise decisions about their future rather than being left to follow the (often undesirable) behaviours modelled by others.

The First Tee operates from a central facility in South Auckland and before embarking on this adventure we visited the Learning Centre to observe classes and meet Executive Director Philippa King and the dedicated coaches who deliver the programme.

We decided that The First Tee was the right charity for us to support as we travel around the world and we are excited about the possibilities our venture presents.
